I agree with Matty's thoughts. Easiest way to do it, no messing about. Plenty of opportunity for other teams to qualify in seasons to come

The thing is this isn't going to be a normal game so I can understand Ben's logic for looking at Champions League qualification in the same way squads are being evaluated.
I would suggest a three step process in the following order
[*]All current league champions [*]All previous Champions League winners [*]Most successful league winners in each country
All current league champions guaranteed entry, after all the game won't be completely about legends there will still be players from the present era therefore present era teams also deserve a place in the Champions League.
Then if each division isn't filled you then include all 18? previous winners of the competition, after all a lot of those teams starting squads could look like those cup winning teams anyway and all former winners should be included in a game like this.
Then if a league's quota of team still isn't decided then go off the most successful league winning teams in each country until each country's quota is allocated.
This method then reflects both the past and present of the game which will mirror how the players are setup in each team.

So England's four representatives would be Leicester as champions, and Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea, Nottm Forest and Aston Villa as past winners. Correct?

In this instance you would advance Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea, Nottm Forest and Aston Villa into the next step and pick the 3 most successful league winners from that pool which would be Man Utd, Liverpool and Aston Villa So for England - Leicester, Man Utd, Liverpool, Aston Villa

I'd be pretty annoyed if I've paid top money for a top club to then find out I'm not in champs league.
I'm sure others would feel the same who paid good money.

Am going to go with go with using the modern day finishing positions for Champions League qualification.
Each way has it's merits, but doing something different like using historic league title totals to decide qualification, should have been announced before the bidding process started.

I think by the sounds of it Ben will apply this to any future legend games but because people had already made bids on the assumption they would get a Champions League place for the team they were bidding on it was only fair to go with the usual format for 119.

I think for a legends game, overall success should be the way to do it Make sure you get these Charlton Legends on board Dazza Clive Mendonca Jermain Defoe - never actually played for Charlton's first team but was on the books until poached by Redknapp when at West Ham Scott Parker Lee Bowyer Carl Jenkinson Jon-Jo Shelvey Ademola Lookman Joe Gomez Robert Lee Paul Konchesky Allan Simonsen - a former European player of the year! John.Barnes Paolo Di Canio Jorge Costa - captained Porto to The Champs League trophy under Mourinho Darren Bent Could be the making of a decent side there. Be sure to email UE!

Defoe never played so no chance. It would be a travesty if Barnes doesn't start at Watford. DiCanio is a possibility but Wednesday is more compelling.
Hales, Flanagan, Jensen, Powell, Luke Young, Bougherra, Zheng Zhi, Kinsella, Murphy, Holland, Kiely, Firmani, Hreidarsson, Kishishev are all very likely candidates.

All fair shouts I was generally raising the awareness of the players that started out at Charlton perhaps UE may not have been aware of or the likes of Simonsen a former European Player Of the Year Charlton once signed from Barcelona. Murphy I would not like to see included put him at Crewe as a ROTW player, there are plenty of CM legend options before Murphy who left under a cloud to be honest. Lee, Kinsella, Bowyer, Holland all spring to mind. No Defoe didn't play for the first team but he played many a youth team game scoring many a goal before being poached by Redknapp at West Ham. McGee - Rufus yes is an option but now has a criminal record so is debatable whether those kind of players should be included. If so then yes Rufus certainly indeed.

True, but then so has Gazza, Maradona, Molby, Adams, Higuita and Cantona to name a few and all will sure to be in the game.
